Deputy Leader of The Nationals in the Senate ![]() Fiona Nash was first elected to Federal Parliament as a Senator for NSW in 2004, and began her position on July 1, 2005. Fiona Currently holds the position as Deputy Leader of the Nationals in the Senate. Senator Fiona Nash grew up in Sydney and relocated to country NSW while studying at Mitchell College in Bathurst. So impressed by what life west of the Blue Mountains had to offer, Senator Nash and her husband David moved to a property at Crowther, located near Young in the NSW southwest. In 1991 Fiona Nash joined the local branch of the National Party, where she was soon elected to the position of branch chairman. Fiona was elected to the State Party Executive and was a delegate to the Federal Council during which time she travelled to the USA and participated in the 1998 political exchange program during the congressional elections. A devoted mother of two boys, Will and Henry, Fiona Nash is a passionate advocate for helping working families balance the demands of work and family life. Fiona Nash has a broad understanding of the myriad of issues affecting people living outside the metropolitan centres, and has used her position in the Senate to be a strong voice for those in regional communities. During her time in Parliament, Fiona Nash has been involved in numerous Senate Committees including Chair of Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References, full member of Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation, full member of Senators’ Interests, participating member of Employment, Workplace Relations and Education Legislation, participating memberof Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee, participating member of Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee, participating member of Community Affairs Legislation, participating member of Environment,Communications, Information Technology and the Arts References and a full member of the Senate Select Committee onthe National Broadband Network. Fiona Nash currently acts as the Deputy Leader of the Nationals in the Senate and chairs the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee.
